Writing a Cover LetterHey, I had no idea what this thing was. One time, I was rejected during an interview and I mustered the courage to ask my interviewer what I could do to improve on my next interview. He said that I should add a cover letter to my resume. I thanked him very much, offered a firm handshake, and wandered out of the building wondering what the hey a cover letter was.
I started asking people with gargly voices, surfing the NET at libraries, and hanging out in shady bookstores looking for cover letter info. I figured out you really need one of these. A cover letter not only shows off your personality, but it also adds a cool voice, a little personality to a more technical resumé. It gives you a chance not only to mention those teamwork experiences that are in your resume, but also, to mention a bit about what teamwork means to you and why teamwork is important to anybody. It's a great chance to blather, one of my strong suits. You can click on three different cover letters on this site to check out what one of this babies looks like: one for a real job, one for a job shadow and one for an internship experience. Just click on the one you'd like to have a look at. And my buddies, Billy Bingley and Shirley Shirkenheimer offered their cover letters just for your use. They're swell. And they're in WORD format (the documents, not the people...) so you can use their set-ups and formats. If you've never written a cover letter before you might want to check out the cover letter worksheet that breaks down the cover letter into its key pieces. That's only if you want a little more work to do. I know, you're going straight to the samples, aren't you... I'd do the same. Bring it home baby! |
